About Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve

Sary-Chelek is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve tucked into the western Tian Shan at 1,873 m, protecting an otherworldly turquoise lake surrounded by ancient walnut-fruit forests, juniper groves, and wild apple and pear trees. The reserve covers 23,868 hectares and harbors an exceptional diversity of tree species — over 160 — making it one of the most botanically rich sites in Central Asia.

The lake itself (7.5 km long, 2.5 km wide, up to 234 m deep) is fed by glacial melt and ringed by seven smaller satellite lakes. The surrounding forest canopy changes dramatically with season — spring wildflowers, summer shade, and a spectacular autumn palette of gold, amber, and crimson that rivals any in the Northern Hemisphere.

Wildlife includes brown bears, lynx, wild boar, porcupines, and over 150 bird species. Snow leopards have been recorded in the upper elevations. Despite its beauty, Sary-Chelek sees only a few thousand visitors per year — a fraction of Issyk-Kul's traffic — making it one of Kyrgyzstan's most rewarding secrets for nature travelers willing to make the effort to reach it.

How to Get There

From Jalal-Abad: drive to the village of Arkyt (4-5 hours via Kerben/Tashkumyr on mountain roads). From Arkyt, it's a 10 km walk or horse ride to the lake. No public transport to Arkyt — hire a driver from Jalal-Abad (~8,000-12,000 KGS round trip) or arrange through CBT Jalal-Abad.

Where to Stay

CBT homestays in Arkyt village ($15-25/night including meals) — the standard and best option. Simple ranger cabins at the lake shore (availability varies, arrange through the reserve office). Camping is allowed in designated areas with a permit. No hotels, no shops at the lake.

Pro Tips

  • 1Permits are required — purchase at the reserve entrance in Arkyt ($10-15 per person, plus a small camera fee for professional equipment)
  • 2The 10 km trail from Arkyt to the lake is beautiful but not flat — allow 3-4 hours with a pack, or hire horses ($10-15)
  • 3Bring all food and supplies from Jalal-Abad — Arkyt has only a very basic village shop
  • 4September-October autumn colors are world-class — the walnut and fruit forests turn golden and red
  • 5The lake water is cold but swimmable in July-August in the shallow southern bays
  • 6Birdwatchers should bring binoculars and arrive at dawn — the forest canopy is alive with activity in early morning
  • 7The road from Jalal-Abad to Arkyt is rough and winding — prone to landslides after rain. Allow extra time.
  • 8Mobile signal is nonexistent at the lake — tell people your plans before going in
  • 9Combine with Arslanbob (3-4 hours from Arkyt) for a comprehensive Jalal-Abad Oblast nature circuit
